Two San Jose residents were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stealing merchandise from the Ross store in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato.

Novato police Lt. Dave Jeffries said 25-year-old Salvador Chavez and 27-year-old Leticia Hernandez went into the store at 116 Vintage Way, took a laundry basket and filled it "to the brim" with clothing around 1:50 p.m.

Chavez carried the laundry basket while Hernandez went to get their car, Jeffries said.

The pair tried to flee in a vehicle but was stopped by police within 25 yards, Jeffries said. Police were alerted to the burglary by store security.

Police said they found another laundry basket filled with Ross merchandise in the vehicle's trunk and are determining from which store it was taken.

The value of the merchandise is over $2,200, police said.

The pair was booked into Marin County Jail for commercial burglary.
