Religious leaders bless East Bay grapes

LIVERMORE, CA

The Livermore Valley Wine Country is home to nearly 50 wineries and the area's annual blessing of the grapes took place on Thursday at Concannon Vineyard in Livermore.

"For thousands of years, wine has played a central role in how men and women have understood the abundance of God's blessings in our lives," Rev. Steve Wilde said.

"No matter how skillfully we may practice or craft, at some point we must put our faith in the source of the grapes, the source of the weather, the source of the earth," Rabbi Rick Winer said.

The cool summer weather has pushed back the start of the harvest by about two to three weeks. Growers expect to pick up to 16,000 tons of wine grapes over the next two months.
