The Oakland Fire Department evacuated several apartments and retail businesses in the area of East 18th Street and Athol Avenue due to a natural gas leak Thursday afternoon.

Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Emon Usher told ABC7 that an a contractor working for AT&T in front of the Lakeview Court Apartments struck a three-inch gas line about 1:45 p.m.

"We had a private contractor that was attempting to repair some phone lines and accidently breached the PG&E gas line," Usher said.

It took crews several hours to cap the leak, which happened at 4:45 p.m.

East 18th Street may remain closed into the evening while crews continue to make repairs.
