HEPA vacuums suck in dust, pet dander and tracked-in pollen. Good Housekeeping checked to see how well they removed embedded dirt from carpeting.

"We also looked at how well they removed pet hair and cleaned bare floors," said Christina Peterson of Good Housekeeping.

In the upright category, getting high marks was the Miele S-7 Bolero. Testers like the way it filters and traps dust particles. But it also comes with a $799 price tag.

"Next is the Eureka Boxx Smartvac Petlover. It was great, a great performer and also a great budget buy. The canisters were much better at cleaning bare floors and easier to carry," said Peterson.

The top performer in the test was the Electrolux Oxygen, it sells for $500.

The Hoover Anniversary Windtunel also ranked high for its adjustable suction, it retails for $300.
