San Francisco police are seeking the public's help in identifying a driver who struck and nearly killed a 23-year-old man in August.

The man was walking on Van Ness Avenue at Broadway at about 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 4 when he was hit by a car traveling south on Van Ness, according to police.

The car continued on with the victim on the hood until he fell off at Pacific Street. The driver then headed west on Pacific toward Franklin Street, police said.

The man, a San Francisco resident, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to police. He required extensive surgery and is now recovering.

Witnesses described the vehicle as an early to mid-2000s model black, four-door BMW 323 sedan with dark tinted windows.

It may have noticeable front-end or windshield damage from the crash, police said.

Police are also asking for help from auto repair shops that may have encountered the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Police Department's hit-and-run detail at (415) 553-1641; text TIP411; or call the confidential tip line at (415) 575-4444.
