Friends fight for SF City College student from being deported

SAN FRANCISCO

Steve Li's supporters gathered at Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer's office, asking her to act on his behalf. They say they have sent countless petitions and thousands of handwritten notes, but so far, nothing has worked.

"He was a student of mine and you can see from my smile he was a great kid. I've taught literally hundreds, maybe even close to 1,000 students in my time as a teacher. A lot of kids come and go and there's always some that kind of stay with you and Steve was one of those," says Li's teacher Sang Chi.

Immigration officials arrested Li in September. He came to this country at age 12 and didn't know about his immigration status.

He is being held at a detention facility in Arizona. Boxer's office says they've met with his attorneys and would like to help, but she won't introduce a personal bill just for him.

By the way, Li's mentor was wearing a cap and gown to bring attention to The Dream Act -- a bill that would put immigrant students on track for citizenship if they attend college.
