Napa man accidentally shot during hunting trip

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif.

At around 4:15 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an accidental shooting near 3000 state Highway 37 in unincorporated Sonoma County near the San Pablo Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Napa resident Daniel Downs, 44, was apparently out pheasant hunting with two friends and his 11-year-old son when the shooting occurred.

"We have determined that the shooting was accidental," sheriff's Capt. Matt McCaffrey said today.

Investigators have not determined who in the hunting party was responsible for shooting Downs, McCaffrey said.

Downs was already dead when deputies and Department of Fish and Game officials arrived at the scene.

The shooting remains under investigation.
