Smokers targeted in two anti-smoking events

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif.

The American Cancer Society marks the third Thursday of each November as the Great American Smokeout, a day to encourage smokers to quit or make a plan to stop smoking.

Contra Costa Health Services is offering free lung testing and tips on how to stop smoking at an event in Martinez today.

Students from Independence University's Respiratory Clinical Institute will help provide the screenings, which are available to Contra Costa County residents 12 years of age or older.

The screenings are taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the lobby and emergency room waiting area at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, as well as on the first floor of the Martinez Health Center. All are located at 2500 Alhambra Ave. in Martinez.

Medical professionals are also holding an anti-smoking event in San Pablo as part of the Great American Smokeout.

Doctors Medical Center and Alliance Medical Group are sponsoring the event, which will provide information about the medical benefits of quitting smoking.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Doctors Medical Center's outpatient center, located at 100A San Pablo Towne Center.
