Antioch toddler dies after accidental shooting

ANTIOCH, Calif.

Police are still questioning the parents, the grandmother and a 4-year-old bother of the victim. They are calling it an accident but say they still do not know exactly how it happened.

Police got the call at 11:33 a.m. Toddler Jayon Carr had been shot in the head.

The boy's uncle says the boy was home with his grandmother and 4-year-old bother.

"He was being baby sitted by the grandmother, I believe, and from what the police said, they said they just think the baby found a gun and shot himself but I don't really know," Kilwan Haywood said.

Antioch police confirm the Carr was playing with his brother when it happened.

"The children were in the bedroom, the parents' bedroom, the grandmother heard the gun shot, the 4-year-old walked out, the grandmother went to the bedroom and found the 2-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound," Antioch Police Capt. Allan Dantando said.

The boys' mother, Laquinda Modique, had recently purchased the handgun and the father, Eddie Carr, Thursday morning had removed the gun from a safe, loaded it and placed it in a drawer.

Both parents have been arrested for felony child endangerment and reckless storage of a firearm. The father has previous weapons and assault arrests and convictions. Police say the grandmother is being questioned but is not under arrest.

Police also confirm that Thursday was Carr's birthday.
