Officials to crackdown on jet skiers at Maverick's

Federal officials are planning new crackdowns on jet skiers watching the winter Mavericks surf contest off the San Mateo County coast.

They'll be on the water, issuing $500 tickets to anyone without a permit. Only 15 personal watercraft will be allowed as part of the patrol. They say limiting jet skis will protect wildlife and minimize noise. But contest organizer Jeff Clark argues this will actually lead to more boats and greater danger to surfers.

Federal officials have oversight because the big wave surfing competition takes place in a national marine preserve.
