Mayor Quan walks Oakland's toughest beat

OAKLAND, Calif.

The neighborhood has seen a surge in violence lately. Beat 33 X is the focus of Mayor Quan's new crime reduction and rejuvenation plan. There have been 1,500 arrests in the neighborhood in the last five years. The unemployment rate for young men is 28 percent.

Quan wants neighbors to get involved in making the streets safer. She is asking them to join a new neighborhood crime prevention council.

Quan also encouraged neighbors to come out for an event to clean up the streets of Oakland next weekend in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.
