Motorcyclist leads deputies on high-speed chase

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif.

At about 1:22 a.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop on a Suzuki motorcycle on Dolan Road near state Highway 1 in Moss Landing, according the sheriff's office.

The motorcycle did not have a license plate and deputies suspected that the vehicle was stolen.

The rider then led deputies on a high-speed chase, with speeds reaching more than 100 mph.

The suspect, later identified as 45-year-old James Hess of Prunedale, abandoned the motorcycle on Linda Vista Place in Prunedale and fled on foot into a densely wooded area.

Officials used a K-9 officer, Enzo, to help locate and arrest the suspect.

Deputies discovered that Hess was on probation, was in possession of burglary tools and had a suspended driver's license.

Deputies were unable to determine if the motorcycle had been stolen because the engine number was damaged and illegible.

The incident remains under investigation.
