Washington looks into rental cars under recall

It is hard to believe that currently there is no federal law stopping rental car agencies from renting you a recalled car.

On Wednesday, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., introduced a bill to change all that. It would force rental companies to ground any cars that are under recall. The bill follows a survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It found three major companies were routinely renting out recalled GM and Chrysler cars without fixing them first.

According to the survey, Enterprise repaired an average of 65 percent of recalled cars, Avis/Budget repaired 53 percent, and Hertz repaired just 34 percent.

Hertz says it changed its policy since the survey, and now pulls all recalled cars off the road. Enterprise says it grounds virtually all of its recalled cars, but we did not hear back from Avis/Budget.
