Major milestone reached in Bay Bridge construction

TREASURE ISLAND

The bridge tower is now 480 feet tall, which is 91 feet taller than the current bridge. When it is completed, it will be the largest self anchored bridge in the world.

A section of the tower was moved into place on Monday morning. Crews worked around the clock all week and the last piece was put into place at 1:20 a.m. Friday. Caltrans officials said it feels like they have some momentum going.

"Originally we had to open the bridge in two different segments; one in 2013 and one in 2014, but with some modifications we were able to make on the Oakland side, we'll be able to open up the whole thing at one time," said Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney.

The opening could happen in September, 2013.

Crews hope to have the 45 foot crown of the tower installed by May.
