FDA begins hearing on food coloring

The Food and Drug Administration has decided to take a closer look at allegations there may be a link between colorings and hyperactivity in children.

Starting today, the FDA is asking a panel of experts to look at the issue with an eye towards new warning labels. Food dyes are commonly found in cereals, sports drinks and chips.

A food industry spokesman says decades of study show artificial food colorings are safe.
