SF to introduce pay by phone parking

SAN FRANCISCO

Starting Thursday, the parking pilot program, which was unveiled last year, will start distributing real-time information collected by smart meters and sensors about where parking is available.

Officials say it will help reduce the carbon footprint and, by this summer drivers will be able to pay-by-phone at all city meters.

The technology will also send a text message to drivers telling them when their meter is about to run out. There will be a 45 cent charge for every transaction made.
