Greenpeace is taking on some of Silicon Valley's biggest companies, accusing them of powering their data centers with dirty energy.

In a report released Thursday, the environmental organization criticizes several companies, including Apple, Facebook and Twitter for the enormous amounts of energy they use and calls on them to commit to using clean, renewable energy sources.

Data centers consumed about 1.5 percent of the total electricity used in the United States in 2006 and that number is expected to double by the end of this year.
