Hybrid stickers set to expire in July

California issued 85,000 clean air stickers between 2005 and 2007. They gave people an incentive to buy clean air vehicles by letting solo drivers use carpool lanes, but all of the stickers expire at the end of June with no exceptions.

"Letters did go out to all 85,000 of our customers that do have the yellow stickers and they've been aware of this for quite a long time because it was going to sunset earlier and then some law, legislation was passed to extend the date. So they knew, know it was coming but we have been notifying our customers," said DMV spokesperson Jan Mendoza.

The DMV credits the stickers with spurring hybrid sales. Californians own one-quarter of all the hybrids registered in the U.S.
