Demonstrators announce Mehserle release protests

OAKLAND, Calif.

Mehserle is expected to be released from jail in Los Angeles between midnight on Sunday and early Monday morning, less than one year after he was convinced of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of unarmed BART passenger Oscar Grant.

Mehserle's sentence was reduced for good behavior, which is standard practice for inmates who don't have a previous criminal record.

Last year, some protests over the involuntary manslaughter conviction turned violent, but Oakland's Mayor Jean Quan thinks things will be differently.

"We always expect our protests to be peaceful," Quan said, "and hundreds of people who have come out -- to the thousands on July 8th -- the vast majority...of them were peaceful. We hope that the police choose to be peaceful as well."

The protest will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland.
