Man killed in crash on I-280 ramp identified

SAN JOSE

Campbell, a San Jose resident, was driving at a high rate of speed on the southbound Interstate Highway 280 transition ramp to state Highway 87 when his Toyota Scion went off the roadway's eastern edge at about 5:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Toyota hit the guardrail and became airborne, crashing into a support pillar and then traveling back into traffic lanes on the ramp before coming to rest its side.

Campbell was wearing a seatbelt but died instantly when the car hit the pillar, CHP officials said.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
