Bay Area biologist asks for help counting bees

A Bay Area biologist is asking for help to find out why the bee population is declining.

San Francisco State biology professor Gretchen LeBuhn has launched "The Great Sunflower Project." As part of it, she's asking for people to take 15 minutes on July 16 and count the bees they see in their backyards.

"We know that they're in trouble; there is good evidence that bees have been declining, so by sampling in your backyard you can actually find out how the bee community is doing in your yard and contribute to us understanding what's happening both locally, regionally and across the continent," LeBuhn said.

Nearly 3,000 people locally have signed up for the bee count.
