A pint of ice cream for a pint of blood

SAN FRANCISCO

The "Pint for Pint" promotion will offer donors at several participating blood centers a free coupon for a pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream, according to the Red Cross.

The promotion, which runs through the end of August, is designed to encourage people to donate blood during a time Red Cross officials call challenging. Many regular blood donors are away on vacation or busy with other summer plans, but the demand for blood often grows due to increased road and travel-related injuries, officials said.

Bay Area blood donors can redeem the free ice cream coupons at Red Cross centers in Oakland, at 6230 Claremont Ave.; in Pleasant Hill, at 140 Gregory Lane, Suite 120; in Pleasanton at 556-B Springdale Ave.; in Newark at 39227 Cedar Blvd.; and in San Jose at 2731 N. First St.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with parental consent, 110 pounds and in generally good health.
