More laid off police to be rehired in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif.

The Oakland Tribune reports a total of 42 of the 80 laid off officers will return if all goes as planned. That total includes ten officers Mayor Jean Quan authorized rehiring in january.

Four more officers began re-training this week and are due back on the streets as early as August 16. The chief says the other eight new hires are wrapping up other commitments.

Mayor Quan says the re-hirings will save the city money by bringing back experienced officers rather than paying to train new ones.
