CHP fatally shoot man on San Diego bridge

SAN DIEGO

San Diego Police Lt. Ernie Herbert says the 54-year-old man was pacing back and forth in lanes early Sunday and yelling that he had a gun.

Herbert says when CHP officers tried to approach the man to prevent him from jumping, he suddenly reached into his pocket and quickly removed his hand as if he was producing a weapon. Three officers opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has been identified, but his name will be withheld until his family can be notified.
