Engineers are installing high-tech sensors on Bay Bridge support beams today to detect any potentially dangerous flaws.

Crews have been installing 640 strategically placed listening devices that are being placed next to 384 critical eye bars. The devices will notify Caltrans immediately if there is a problem with one of the eye bars.

The is in response to a fatigue defect that was found on a structural steel beam in a regularly scheduled inspection during the 2009 Labor Day closure.

MISTRAS Group, Inc. was awarded the contract valued at $3.4 million for the installation of the system. The company will be responsible for the sensor and system manufacture, installation and implementation..
