50 cars have tires slashed in vandalism spree

BERKELEY, Calif.

"Just completely dumbfounded, I'm baffled" victim Michael O'Hara said. "Why would someone do this?"

That's the question Berkeley police kept asking Wednesday.

"We have either the thrill suspect or the power suspect or the angry suspect or the one who may have mental health challenges," Berkeley Police Sgt. Mary Kussmiss said.

There are other theories.

"For example, some kind of political commentary on driving, this is Berkeley, after all," victim Martin Holden said.

Berkeley police are warning residents no get their hopes up.

"This type of spree of series is very difficult to solve," Kussmiss said.

But difficult does not mean impossible. Berkeley police hope that maybe a resident saw something Tuesday night or might have had a surveillance camera rolling.
