Police make arrest after manhunt closed I-580

OAKLAND, Calif.

A witness said around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, a car pulled up alongside a woman walking on the 4000 block of MacArthur Boulevard, demanded her purse and then shot her twice in the legs.

"The suspect robbed a female adult, he fled the scene in a car, he traveled towards 580 and 35th Avenue," Oakland Police Ofc. Johanna Watson said. "He crashed at the on-ramp to 580 at 35th Avenue."

From there, the California Highway Patrol shut down westbound lanes of the freeway and heavily armed police searched the area near the freeway.

The suspect's vehicle, a black Lexus, could be seen in the bushes next to I-580 near the 35th Street overpass. Inside, a woman's purse was visible.

The freeway was reopened around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

The victim has life-threatening injuries. She is being treated at an area hospital.
