It's almost Halloween and you may be out buying costumes for your children, but how can you be sure those accessories won't contain harmful levels of lead or cadmium?

Here's the good news. The Center for Environmental Health says most Halloween jewelry it tested fell within safe standards.

Here's some tips to avoid toxic metals: avoid pieces that are coated with paint, which may contain lead, avoid brightly colored vinyl products because yellow dye often has been found to contain lead and finally, consider buying jewelry that is not made of metal, which could include lead or cadmium.

Lead poisoning has been linked to learning disabilities. Cadmium is a known carcinogen.
