Mayoral hopeful David Chiu's headquarters burglarized

SAN FRANCISCO

Nicole Derse says thousands of dollars of equipment was stolen at the headquarters on Van Ness and Clay on Sunday night. She says the intruders rooted through confidential campaign materials in drawers, scattering them on the floor.

Chiu, president of the city's Board of Supervisors, is contesting the mayoral election on Tuesday.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that police investigated the crime scene Monday. They don't know if the break-in was politically motivated but emphasize that Chiu and his campaign workers would not be distracted by the event.
