Mavericks surf contest opening window delayed

The director of Mavericks has delayed the opening of the big wave surf contest's window. It originally was slated to open Dec. 1 and close March 30.

The contest takes place almost every winter at Pillar Point and draws elite surfers from around the world.

The organizer says one reason for the delay is to avoid conflicting with another pro surf contest in Hawaii.

Mavericks has had trouble getting sponsors in recent years. Officials did not say if that has anything to do with the delay.
