Study: One-third of CA students pass fitness test

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

In a report published by the Los Angeles Times on Saturday, results found only 25 percent of fifth-graders, 32 percent of seventh-graders and about 37 percent of ninth graders could pass all six sections of a statewide fitness exam.

Flexibility, body fat and physical fitness exercises including running a mile and doing pushups are part of the fitness test.

The scores were lower than the state-wide average in San Francisco County, with only 20 percent of fifth-grade students testing health in all six fitness standards. The number was 30 percent for seventh-graders and 33 percent for ninth-graders who passed all six fitness zones.

Results of the fitness exam can be viewed for the overall state and by county, district and city at the California Department of Education website here.
