Hundreds march on Oscar Grant death anniversary

OAKLAND, Calif.

Hundreds marched from Oakland's City Hall to the Fruitvale BART station where Grant was shot on New Year's Day in 2009 during a confrontation with former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle.

The Oscar Grant Committee organized Sunday's march. The group is calling for BART's police force to disband and wants officers with other agencies to be disarmed.

"This movement is about our ability to utilize and speak to the injustice that we experience in our community," said Cephus Johnson, Oscar Grant's uncle. "Police brutality is the underlying thread when it comes to what happened with Oscar Grant and Occupy Oakland, the movement that we are experiencing today."

A jury convicted Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter in Grant's death. Mehserle was released from prison last June after serving less than a year of his sentence.
