Getting your first cat as an adult doubles your risk of allergies. On the flipside, those who had cats as children are less likely to become allergic to cats as adults.

The study from the University of Verona in Italy also found the allergy risk increases if the cat is allowed in the bedroom.

The study, which followed participants for nine years, also found the allergy risk was up to four times higher among those who already were allergic to things besides cats.

The findings are in the December issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
