The 15 to 18 foot swells were not ideal for surfing; professionals like the Mavericks competitors say they aren't pristine enough.
"It's definantly not clean and it's bumpy out there," Mavericks competitor Alex Martins said.
Mavericks' organizers say the waves have to be absolute perfect before they'll announce the competition.
Still, surfers headed out to practice at Mavericks Friday, despite the high surf advisory in place. They also held the traditional Mavericks opening ceremony.
