Corrections dept on track to reduce prison population

The corrections department says it's on track to meet a federally mandated order to reduce the state prison population. Over the past six months 11,000 inmates have been released or transferred to county jails.

The corrections department has until June 2013 to release or transfer another 23,000 prisoners. The state is using a portion of the vehicle licensing fee and sales tax revenues to help counties pay to house transferred inmates.

Gov. Jerry Brown is supporting a ballot measure that would raise taxes over the next four years to continue that funding.
