A third party crew was working on a sewer line when they hit a 2-inch gas line.
Homes on Chestnut Avenue were evacuated as a precaution, but emergency crews say the most people were not home at the time and residents were allowed to return to their homes about 45 minutes later.
A PG&E crew capped the leak a short time later.
Tuesday's leak was located approximately 2 miles from the site of the 2010 gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.
