Kids to be studied near factories in the East Bay

A study by the nonprofit Global Community Monitor involves blood testing of children, ages one-to-five, who live within a mile of the Custom Alloy Scrap Metal Sales on Poplar Street in West Oakland. Children who live near Pacific Steel Casting on Second Street in West Berkeley will also be tested. Researchers will compare exposure levels of the children living in the study area -- with children who live in less industrial areas.

An informational meeting about the study will be held tonight at 6:30 at Oakland Children's Hospital.
