OSA is the most common form of sleep apnea, where people stop breathing for up to 20 seconds, as many as 30 times an hour. OSA causes an increase in blood pressure and a drop in oxygen, which could lead to a silent stroke.
Silent strokes can be detected only through brain imaging and are associated with an increased risk for a major stroke.
