More than half jewelry tested contained lead

March 13, 2012 3:46:06 PM PDT
The environmental group "The Ecology Center" bought 99 pieces of jewelry from 14 national retailers and had the pieces tested. 59 percent of the jewelry pieces contained lead levels above federal safety standards.

Cadmium was found in 10 percent of the pieces at levels greater than 100 parts per million. Cadmium is a known carcinogen, but there are no federal safety standards for cadmium at this time.

Most of the jewelry purchased was under $10.

ABC7 was unsuccessful in tracking down any of the manufacturers.
