Do hybrids really save you money on gas?

With gasoline pushing $5 a gallon it may seem like a no-brainer to purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle. But before you throw down thousands of dollars more for a hybrid or electric vehicle, are the gas savings really worth it?

Experts at say you would have to own a green vehicle on average of seven to 10 years in order to recoup the savings on gas.

Even at $5 a gallon, it takes a while for the gasoline savings to add up to all of the upfront costs.

Edmunds says consumers should also consider tax breaks, driving habits and of course the pure please of driving green.
