Garamendi urges BART to buy American

The $3.2 billion contract for a new fleet of BART trains will be awarded in May, and one Bay Area congressman is urging BART to buy American.

Three companies are competing for the contract; one from Canada, one from France, and one from South Korea. BART officials say there's no American company that can build their trains.

Congressman John Garamendi warns BART, the "Bay Area does not need another Bay Bridge fiasco."

Under federal law, 60 percent of the trains' total value must be produced in the U.S. BART says it added incentives into the contract to boost that percentage.
