Amateur photographers capture lightning

SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco resident David Jones was one of the people snapping away last night. From his 33rd floor apartment, Jones managed to shoot more than 300 pictures, trying to get the most dramatic lightning strikes.

"Sure enough, lightning is going to strike at some point while the shutter is open," Jones said.

There were more than 750 strikes on and off-shore in the Bay Area, but the one picture everyone is talking about is the one showing eight bolts hitting or falling very close to the Bay Bridge. That image was captured by San Francisco resident Phil McGrew.

McGrew says he's wanted to get a lightning shot ever since he moved to San Francisco two years ago, but this was only the third time he's had the chance. McGrew says he took the photo with a single 20-second exposure.
