Oakland firefighters knockdown building fire

OAKLAND, Calif.

Firefighters responded to the fire near the corner of 99th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard at 4:16 a.m., Battalion Chief Eleanor Bolin-Chew said.

The caller who reported the fire initially said it was burning outdoors, but responding firefighters could not find the site of the blaze at first.

They eventually located the vacant two-unit commercial building, which was previously used as a barbershop and a rib shack years ago, Bolin-Chew said.

The building sustained significant damage, Bolin-Chew said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire and was taken to a hospital and later released. Bolin-Chew would not comment on the nature of the firefighter's injuries.
