Gold theft is on the rise in Oakland. On Thursday police officers hit the streets in the Fruitvale District with flyers and a warning.

Criminals are targeting people wearing gold necklaces, rings or any other type of gold jewelry.

Police say they are increasing patrols in the area, but they recommend keeping your jewelry at home. If you must wear it, try to conceal it under your clothing.
