1 killed in big-rig crash on I-680 on-ramp

SAN JOSE, Calif.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the big-rig, which was carrying broccoli, was speeding along a curve on the on-ramp from eastbound McKee Road to northbound Interstate Highway 680, CHP Officer DJ Sarabia said.

The big-rig went out of control and fell onto its side, crushing the Camry, which was carrying two women, Sarabia said.

The crash was reported at 9:57 a.m., according to the CHP.

The passenger in the Camry, a woman in her late 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Camry's driver and the big-rig driver were both taken to hospitals with minor injuries, Sarabia said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 10:29 a.m.

Both the eastbound McKee Road on-ramp to northbound I-680 and the northbound I-680 off-ramp to westbound McKee Road are closed, Sarabia said.

The CHP spokesman said the ramps are not expected to reopen until around 2 p.m.
