Shots fired during marijuana eradication operation

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif.

It happened at Mt. Madonna County Park near Gilroy. One suspect is in custody after at least one sheriff's deputy opened fire. One suspect is still on the run and it's unknown whether they are armed or not. Two rifles were found at the marijuana camp.

A nine-member marijuana eradication team set out Thursday morning to find and destroy the suspected illegal pot garden. Gunfire broke out around 11:45 a.m. after the team came across two people near the grow. A sheriff's spokesperson told ABC7 News he wasn't sure what triggered the shooting or if there was any return fire.

"Within an hour of the shooting taking place, one of the suspects did turn himself in to a SWAT team, a tactical team from Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. It was discovered that that suspect had a non-life threatening injury to his arm," Sgt. Jose Cardoza said.

That person was transported to a hospital. Authorities are still looking for the second person.
