Work on the Sunrise Powerlink started while Arnold Schwarzenegger was in office. The project cost $1.9 billion and went live last month. The 117 mile transmission line links Imperial County to San Diego with enough energy to power more than 500,000 homes. Current Gov. Jerry Brown calls it an investment in California's future.
Windmills and solar farms will provide some of the power it delivers. The Sunrise Powerlink Project was created to bring renewable energy to help the state meet environmental goals.
