Marchers mark BART cellphone service shut off

One year ago, BART pulled the plug on the Internet and cellphone signals that a rowdy band of demonstrators were using to coordinate their protest. Monday night they wanted to remind everyone, they haven't forgotten. They staged a march Monday evening from the Fruitvale BART Station to BART headquarters near Lake Merritt.

The group sees the cellphone shutdown as a violation of their right to free speech. BART called it a public safety tactic, trying to dissuade those protesters from organizing as the protesters threatened to shut down BART service during the evening commute.

Along their way to BART headquarters, those marchers say that they plan to stop off at a vacant former library that is also being occupied with another protest.
