Brush fire near I-280 burns 5 acres, under control

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The fire was reported south of 280 in an area near Story Road and Remillard Court around 3:25 p.m., according to Fire Captain Mike Van Elgort.

The fire appears to have started closer to the freeway and spread quickly toward Coyote Creek in the open space due, fueled by wind and dry grass, Van Elgort said.

The fire approached the parking lot of a business on Remillard Court, but no homes or businesses were damaged. Some homeless encampments near the creekbed were burned, however, and had to be evacuated.

The fire was contained by 4:30 p.m. and under control as of around 5 p.m.

The slow lane on southbound Interstate Highway 280 was closed at 11th Avenue due to the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
