Marmot found in SJ may have come from Yosemite

SAN JOSE

A marmot ended up running around a storm drain beneath Cottle and Whitegate Avenues in the Willow Glen neighborhood last night. City crews teamed up with wildlife specialists to catch it.

This large rodent may have hitched a ride to San Jose either inside or underneath someone's vehicle. Officials have a strong lead that the marmot is from Yosemite. A group called Wild Rescue plans to work to release the marmot back to its native habitat. It's important for this female yellow-bellied marmot get back to her native habitat before too long so she can hibernate.

Marmots usually live in the Sierra, above the 6,000 foot level.
